Poor Michelle, Suffering from Kid-in-a-Candy-Store-itis

I have three words for Michelle Obama, “elegant, understated fashion”. She simply has too many choices; she needs to learn to be a good editor. Style is as much about what you don’t choose as what you do.

American fashion is about uncomplicated clothes with clean lines worn with a dash of panache. Iconic American designers like Oscar de la Renta, Calvin, Klein, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan and Michael Kors know how to design contemporary clothing without falling prey to foofy, fussy design.

Our First Lady has a lot going for her; a statuesque, toned frame, a stunningly handsome face and the deep pockets to wear whatever she wants.

How I would love to see her in these outfits for her daytime activities:

She favors sleeveless dresses; wouldn’t this look polished (from Michael Kors) with a red or bright yellow trench coat and black patened leather accessories?

This dress (from Oscar de la Renta) would look fabulous on the First Lady.

This dress (from Donna Karan) is embellished without looking fussy.

Here’s an outfit (from Oscar de la Renta) worthy of meeting the queen.

I felt that on her European trip, the colors of Mrs. Obama’s clothes were too dark for early spring. So many photos were taken while wearing a coat; wouldn’t these (from Oscar de la Renta and Calvin Klein) have been sharp looking?

I would love to see Mrs. Obama stepping out of Airforce One in these outfits (both from Ralph Lauren).

Frankly, I think the First Lady is a little too old for J.Crew (it’s great for her girls, though). I’d like to see her in these kinds of outfits (first 2 from Michael Kors, one from Ralph Lauren) on casual days.

Here are a few elegant choices for semi-formal and formal affairs.

And, (drum roll, please) the perfect inaugural ball gown.

These clothes are more befitting to the First Lady of the United States. They personify what American fashion is all about.

Ta-ta for now!

yes you’re right, and your choices are spot on. i think michelle is choosing partly based on setting a new precedent for affordable fashion, and giving new designers a chance. she does need to constrain her choices; again i agree with you. love your blog, keep up the great work.
